Kenya Airways has commended its crew members who flew the body of former prime minister Raila Odinga back to Nairobi from India, describing the repatriation as a “solemn duty”.
The national carrier issued a statement praising the professionalism of staff who brought Mr Odinga and the accompanying delegation home from Mumbai following his death in Kerala on Wednesday.
“We extend our heartfelt appreciation to our crew who safely flew back the late Rt Hon Raila Odinga and the accompanying delegation from Mumbai,” the airline said. “Your professionalism, composure, and dedication in this solemn duty embody the true spirit of service and care that defines us.”
The 80-year-old veteran opposition leader collapsed during a morning walk whilst visiting India and died from cardiac arrest despite medical intervention at Devamatha Hospital in Kerala State.
Kenya Airways, which brands itself as “The Pride of Africa”, said it was honoured to have played a role in returning “one of Kenya’s great sons home” as the nation enters a period of mourning.
The repatriation flight marks the beginning of what is expected to be an extended period of national tribute for Mr Odinga, who spent three decades pursuing the presidency and played a pivotal role in Kenya’s democratic transformation.
Tributes have poured in from across Kenya and internationally since news of his death emerged. President William Ruto visited Mr Odinga’s Nairobi residence to pay his respects, whilst Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi described him as “a towering statesman”.
Details of funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days.
