Kenyan President Dr. William Ruto has extended his heartfelt congratulations to the newly elected President of the Republic of Botswana, Duma Boko, after a shock defeat of the long-ruling party.
Boko was sworn in during a closed session at the office of the chief justice after Friday’s victory.
In a statement, Ruto said: “On behalf of the Government and the People of the Republic of Kenya and on my own behalf, I convey to you, Your Excellency and through you to the Government and the People of the Republic of Botswana my heartfelt congratulations on your successful election as the President of the Republic of Botswana.”
Voters in Botswana delivered a surprise victory to an opposition coalition, handing defeat to the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) which had ruled the country for nearly six decades.
The 54-year-old Duma Boko of the Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) will replace outgoing President Mokgweetsi Masisi, who conceded defeat after his party’s landslide loss.
Ruto hailed Boko’s “decisive historic victory” as a clear affirmation of the Botswanan people’s trust and confidence in the new leadership. The Kenyan President also recognised the “momentous and brotherly relations” between the two nations, rooted in shared values and a commitment to strengthening their partnership.
“I am confident that under your guidance, this partnership will continue to flourish, fostering deeper ties that benefit both our peoples and contribute to regional stability and prosperity,” Ruto stated.
The Kenyan leader went on to convey his best wishes for the health, happiness, prosperity, and well-being of the Botswanan people, assuring the new President of his highest esteem.
