Kenyan President William Ruto met with Catholic Church leaders at the State House in Nairobi on Friday i8n a bid to address ongoing national tensions,.
The meeting comes in the wake of recent deadly protests that have rocked the country.
President Ruto welcomed the Catholic Church’s commitment to participate in multi-sectoral discussions aimed at finding solutions to the issues facing Kenya.
The delegation was led by Archbishop Maurice Muhatia, Chairman of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops.
“We welcome the commitment by the Catholic Church to participate in a multi-sectoral engagement that seeks solutions to the issues facing our country,” President Ruto stated after the meeting.
Through this collective approach, we will move Kenya forward. At State House, Nairobi, met Catholic Bishops led by the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops Chairman Archbishop Maurice Muhatia.”
This high-level engagement follows a tumultuous period in Kenya, marked by protests against a controversial finance bill that proposed significant tax hikes. The demonstrations turned deadly earlier this week, with reports of over 20 fatalities and damage to public property, including part of the parliament building.
In response to the public outcry, President Ruto had announced the withdrawal of the contentious finance bill just a day before meeting with the Catholic leaders. This move was seen as a concession to ease tensions and open the door for dialogue.
The involvement of the Catholic Church, a significant institution in Kenya, in these discussions could potentially play a crucial role in mediating between the government and the aggrieved populace. The Church’s participation underscores the gravity of the situation and the need for a broad-based approach to address the country’s challenges.
As Kenya grapples with economic pressures and social unrest, the outcome of these multi-sectoral engagements will be closely watched. The government’s willingness to involve religious leaders in the dialogue process signals a potential shift towards a more inclusive approach in addressing national issues.
While protests continued in parts of Nairobi even as the meeting took place, the engagement between the government and the Catholic Church represents a step towards finding a peaceful resolution to the current crisis.
