Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has raised concerns over the injury sustained by Mohamed Salah during Egypt’s 2-2 draw with Ghana at the Africa Cup of Nations on Thursday.
Salah was forced off just before halftime after suffering a left thigh injury in what seems like a major blow for the Egyptian team.
In a press conference on Friday, Klopp confirmed Liverpool are still awaiting further details on the severity of the injury.
“We don’t have any updates yet. I spoke with him last night and further assessment is required,” Klopp stated.
While the exact nature of the problem is unknown, Klopp admitted “there is definitely something going on.” He noted that Salah’s departure was alarming given how rarely the forward leaves matches mid-game.
“Typically, hamstring injuries manifest differently, but he still felt something. We all know how rarely Mo goes off or needs to go off, so there is definitely something going on,” Klopp said.
Liverpool’s medical staff are working to determine the full extent of the injury. In the meantime, Klopp does not have a concrete timeframe for Salah’s return, which will cause concern given his importance to Liverpool.
Salah has been in sensational form this season, netting 23 goals in 26 games across all competitions. His absence for any period would massively impact Liverpool, who are competing on four fronts.
For now, Klopp and every Liverpool fan will anxiously await further news on Salah’s injury, hoping it is not serious with many massive matches on the horizon.
Egypt is set to face Cape Verde in the final round of the group stage games on Monday, and their only option for advancement in the continental tournament is to secure a victory.
The Pharaohs currently sit in second place in Group B with two points after two draws.
They are one point behind group leaders Cape Verde, who play face Mozambique in the second on Friday.
