Starting in August, mobile users in Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Botswana will no longer be charged for mobile roaming.
The initiative in the four Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries is part of a move to create a One Network Area (ONA).
Cross-border travelers in Africa generally face high internet and mobile roaming tariffs.
The elimination of roaming charges is expected to benefit businesspeople who often travel across the four countries for work.
“The development is important for the region for many reasons,” said Marks Setshwane, Botswana’s communications regulatory authority’s director of business and development.
“It is a model of regional integration that we have managed to achieve as SADC. We are small economies, but there is always power in numbers,” he said.
