The Pan African Scrabble Association (PANASA) has announced it will be “anchoring Mauritius’ first rated Scrabble Tournament” on the 15th & 16th June 2024.
The event will be officially rated by PANASA, who will also apply for a rating from the World English-Language Scrabble Players’ Association (WESPA).
PANASA will provide technical and logistical support for organizing the two-day tournament, an official statement say.
The competition marks a major milestone, as it will be the first officially rated Scrabble event ever held in Mauritius following PANASA’s rules, regulations and rating system.
A key outcome will be the election of a caretaker executive committee during the tournament weekend. This committee will oversee the creation of an official National Scrabble Association for Mauritius and supervise its affiliation with the Mauritius sports authority, WESPA and PANASA.
While other details are still being finalized by PANASA and the local organizing team, this move represents the latest stride the Association is making to grow competitive Scrabble across the African continent.
Local Mauritians will have the opportunity to earn official PANASA ratings and rankings by competing in this inaugural rated event on home soil. The ratings achieved will go on players’ permanent records.
Elite players from Scrabble powerhouses like South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya are also expected to travel to Mauritius to compete and improve their own ratings against the host nation’s players.
As an idyllic tourist destination, Mauritius will now stake its claim as a new epicenter for competitive Scrabble in Africa.
Registration details and the official tournament venue are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
