Moroccan police arrested three suspects today, including a doctor and a pharmacist, for their alleged involvement in a case of psychotropic pills trafficking in Sale, a city near Rabat.
A security services source said the arrested suspects also included the pharmacist’s assistants, stressing that the defendants were arrested on the basis of information from Morocco’s General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST).
The new security operation is linked to the arrest of two people in Sale and Casablanca, enabling police to seize over 3,000 psychotropic tablets.
Investigations show that the doctor was involved in providing prescriptions that the pharmacist and his assistant used to obtain quantities of psychotropic drugs before issuing them to drug traffickers.
Searches carried out as part of the operation enabled police to seize an additional shipment consisting of 3,300 psychotropic tables of different types, in addition to a batch of prescriptions and invoices related to the acquisition of psychotropic substances.
Police put the suspects in custody for further investigation to determine the circumstances of the case as well as to arrest all potential accomplices.
In its 2022 report, Morocco’s General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) said that the psychrotrophic tablets seized last year recorded an increase of 85% compared to a year earlier.
Joint field operations carried out by police and the DGST enabled the processing of over 92,000 cases, including the arrest of more than 120,000 individuals involved in drug related cases.
