Niger has reduced its planned spending for 2023 by 40 per cent because of sanctions placed on them by international communities after the junta took over power in a July coup d’état.
In a televised statement on Saturday, the junta government said the country’s economy has become one of the world’s poorest countries.
The 2023 budget was initially estimated at 3.29 trillion CFA francs ($5.3 billion), and was reduced to 1.98 trillion, the statement said, without giving further details.
President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26 was ousted by president guard, the junta have set up a transitional government to oversees the affairs of the country.
The takeover prompted condemnation from the ECOWAS, the European Union and the United States, who imposed sanctions, froze assets or halted aid.
