Nigerian striker Victor Boniface’s proposed move to AC Milan has collapsed after the Italian club subjected him to four separate medical examinations before ultimately withdrawing from the transfer.
Milan pulled out of the deal for the Bayer Leverkusen forward due to concerns over his fitness and medical history, according to German publication BILD.
The Nigerian international travelled to Italy over the weekend for medical tests with the Rossoneri, but has since returned to Germany after Milan remained uncertain about proceeding with the signing.
Milan sporting director Igli Tare acknowledged the club’s reservations when speaking to the press on Saturday.
“We knew that he had problems in the past, we are evaluating everything as planned with regards to the health and fitness of the player,” Mr Tare said.
“His qualities are undoubted. We are just trying to make the right decision for this situation.”
The deal’s collapse comes despite Milan having reached a complete agreement with Leverkusen for the transfer, which would have involved a €5m loan fee and a €24m option to purchase the striker at a later date.
Simon Rolfes, Leverkusen’s sporting director, confirmed to BILD that the deal would be considered finished following the player’s return to Germany.
The failed transfer represents a significant setback for Boniface, who had appeared set for a move to one of Europe’s most prestigious clubs.
Milan’s extensive medical examination process highlights the increasing scrutiny top clubs place on player fitness, particularly for high-value transfers in the current market.
