Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has arrived in Dubai, United Arab Emirates to attend the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) which runs from November 30 to December 12.
Amb. Tuggar announced his arrival on Twitter, posting “Touchdown in Dubai for #COP28! Nigeria is at the forefront of climate diplomacy, and I’m eager to contribute to the discussions on shaping a resilient and green future.”
He touched down Sunday evening and was greeted by UAE government officials and members of the Nigerian embassy. Amb. Tuggar is leading a delegation from Nigeria that will participate in negotiations and meetings during the 2-week climate summit.
COP28 is bringing together global leaders and climate policymakers to discuss progress made since last year’s COP27 summit in Egypt and to continue working towards international climate goals. Key issues on the agenda include reducing emissions, climate finance for developing nations, and addressing loss and damage from climate change impacts.
In remarks upon arrival, Amb. Tuggar emphasised Nigeria’s commitment to climate action and the importance of industrialised nations following through on promises for financial assistance made in previous agreements:
Amb. Tuggar is scheduled to deliver a speech later this week outlining Nigeria’s positions and expectations heading into the high-level negotiations at COP28. Meetings between the Nigerian delegation and other African ministers are also planned to coordinate strategy for the continent.
Delegates from about 200 countries, leaders of business and finance, and representatives of civil society Groups are gathering in Dubai from November 30 to December 12 for the COP28 climate conference with the aim of fast-tracking the transition to a clean-energy future.
COP28 is expected to stress the importance of collective action to stop climate change and the critical role of finance in the low-carbon transition. With our participation we hope to help investors and other capital markets participants see what’s ahead and back climate commitments with action.
