Kenya’s National Police Service has announced that the Acting Inspector General, Noor Gabow will continue holding the position until a substantive officer is recruited.
Gabow has been serving in the position since August 26 when the former IG Hillary Mutyambai appointed him as he proceeded to a sick leave.
“The @NPSC_KE designates Mr Noor Y. Gabow, CBS as Acting Inspector General (IG) with effect from 26th August 2022. Gabow will act in this position until a substantive Inspector General is appointed in accordance with Article 245 (2)(a) of the Constitution of Kenya 2010” NPS said in social media statement on Friday.
Gabow was to hand over the office back to Mutyambai after his sick leave expires.
“In my absence, Mr Noor Gabow, the Deputy Inspector General – Administration Police Service, will act as the Inspector General of the National Police Service until my return,”Mutyambai said as he announced while
The outgoing IG, however, opted to take a terminal leave.
Mutyambai was to retire next year around April.
President William Ruto announced that he had opted to take leave until his retirement.
“After discussing with Mutyambai, I have accepted his terminal leave. I have transmitted the same to the National Police Service to proceed with advertising that position,” Ruto said on September 27.
Before his appointment in acting capacity, Gabow was serving as the deputy inspector general of police.
Ruto has already nominated Japheth Koome Nchebere to the position of Inspector General of Police.
Koome if approved by the parliament will take over from Mutyambai.
Koome, a former Nairobi County Police Commander, is the current Commandant of the National Police Service College, Kiganjo.
His name will be sent to Parliament for approval, Ruto said.
Koome is a career police officer who has risen the ranks to reach Senior Assistant Inspector General of police.
He served as Officer Commanding Police Officer at Central police in Nairobi and regional commander for Nairobi.
