The Wailing Wall/ Western Wall
The Wailing Wall, also known as the Western Wall, the Kotel, or Solomon’s Wall, is a place of prayer and pilgrimage that is sacred to the Jewish people. It is the only remaining part of the retaining wall surrounding the Temple Mount, the site of the First and Second Temples of Jerusalem, which were destroyed by the Babylonians and the Romans.
It is located in the Old City of Jerusalem, which is claimed by both Israel and Palestine as their capital city. It is made of thick, corroded limestone and dates back to about the first century BCE.
The Wailing Wall is a sacred place that many Christians visit to have an encounter with God, many believe that their prayers are answered when they touch the wall and prayer.
Many other African leaders have visited this sacred place, including Ghana’s president Nana Akufo-Addo in 2012.
“Today in the Old City of #Jerusalem, we visited the Western Wall, also known as Wailing Wall. At this sacred site, we prayed for peace & unity for all & placed our prayer petitions in the Wall’s stones”.
“A deeply spiritual experience that’s energised our faith”, the president posted on X (formerly Twitter)
“We undertook a pilgrimage to the Holy Church of the Sepulchre. Here we traced the final footsteps of our Lord Jesus Christ’s crucifixion, entombment & resurrection. We celebrate our Saviour’s triumph over death which is the core of our Christian faith.”
