Rwandan President Paul Kagame joined tens of thousands of football supporters at Amahoro Stadium in Kigali for a tense Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier between Rwanda and Nigeria.
The match, which ended in a 0-0 draw, saw President Kagame seated among the crowd, demonstrating his support for the national team, known as Amavubi.
Despite the lack of goals, the atmosphere in the stadium was electric, with the presence of the head of state adding to the occasion’s significance.
The result leaves Nigeria top of Group D with four points, following their earlier home win against Benin. However, the Super Eagles will be disappointed not to have secured victory against the determined Rwandan side.
President Kagame’s attendance highlights the importance of football in Rwanda and the government’s commitment to supporting the national team’s aspirations.
The stalemate gives Rwanda a valuable point in their campaign to qualify for the 2025 AFCON finals, with the team likely to have drawn inspiration from the president’s presence in the stands.
