I was there when she sent me a message. She said, “Guess what…” The message was an hour old but what I was supposed to guess didn’t follow the message. I asked her, “You won a lottery?” “No, I didn’t win a lottery,” she said. “If I did, would you be the one I would call and tell? Guess again. you’re far from home.” Annette isn’t a girl I will play a guessing game with. She’s always straightforward and didn’t have time for small talks. We could meet in a moment and two seconds later, we are done talking to each other. That was the kind of relationship we had but I’d known her for ages. She’s an area lady who didn’t have time for boys-boys stuff so we also ignored her oftentimes.
“Annette, I can’t win this guess game ooo. Unless you’re ready to be here with me all day telling me to guess something different.” She sent laughing emojis. I sent a lot of that too. I said, “Now tell me, what should I guess.” She said, “It is a dream I had about you.” If there’s any human being on earth who should have a dream about me, it shouldn’t be Annette. We don’t even talk or play. I laughed a little in my head. I said, “Tell me about it. Who was I in your dream and what was I doing there?” She answered, “Wait let me call you.”
I waited for an hour before she called. She said, “I don’t usually remember my dreams. I have a lot of them when I sleep but I will wake up and won’t remember any of the things that happened in the dream. But I remember this one. It’s like a movie I watched yesterday. Every character’s face is known. Every word they said keeps ringing in my ears. It means something. All those vivid pictures can’t be for nothing.” My interest was piqued for two reasons. The fact that it was Annette telling me about a dream she had about me and the fact that the dream means a lot to her to the extent that she would call me and narrate it to me. I said slowly, “Annette, I’m still waiting for what happened in the dream.”
“This is what happened. The skies were clear but all of a sudden it started raining. You entered my room soaked in the rain. Your first statement was, “Are you sure this rain won’t distract our wedding tomorrow?” I answered, “If it rains, we’ll take it as God pouring his blessings on our marriage.” You said, “Then God should better wait until everyone is in church before he pours out his blessing.”
I couldn’t wait until the end of her narration so I asked, “Did the dream last long enough for us to get married?” She screamed, “That’s exactly what happened and guess what…it rained on the wedding day. No one was around when we got married except your parents and mine. I was in a full wedding gown but you were wearing only nickers and a t-shirt. Could this be love?” I burst out laughing. I said, “Weird dreams.” She answered, “Yeah it’s weird but do you mind praying about it? Maybe it’s God’s way of telling us something.”
I was lost for a moment. I was like, “Ann, what exactly should I say to God? That he should make the dream come true or he should kick it off if it’s something that’s coming?” She said, “But marriage isn’t a disaster? How would anyone pray against it?” I told her to pray about it and tell me what God said. To me, that should have been the end of the conversation but to Annette, it was the beginning of the show. Each morning she would send me a message, “Ray, have you been praying? Have you been hearing God’s voice concerning my dream?”
It got to a point where I felt disturbed each time she talked about the dream. One day I told her, “I don’t think God cares about your dream and who was in it. We all dream. Dogs dream. Sheep dream. They wake up and live a normal life forgetting about what they dreamt about. Just forget about it. It’s just a wandering dream. You can’t attach any meaning to it.” She was adamant. She was pressing me to do something about it. She asked me, “Have you discussed it with your pastor? Maybe he could help.” I laughed at her. I said, “I have a girlfriend. I think you have a boyfriend too. This is the reality we should focus on. Let the dream slide.”
I started missing her calls. The whole dream and her attitude toward it was getting weird to me. I told my friends and they found it weird too. One asked, “Or she’s having a crush on you?” I answered, “Annett is not a woman to entertain crushes. Don’t you know that girl? Does she even have a social life? All she does is go to church and go to work. We live not far apart but each time we meet, it’s just “hello” we exchange. Nothing else, so why should she even care?”
One early Saturday morning, I heard a knock on my door. I opened the door and it was Annette. She greeted and I responded. She asked, “Can I come in?” I answered, “I’m shirtless. Let me wear something and come out.” I closed the door and went back in. I was wearing a shirt when I heard the sound of my door opening. It was Annette. She entered and sat on the chair next to my bed. “Annette, I told you to wait outside.” She answered, “What’s in your room that you don’t want me to see? Anyway, you have a nice room. Very clean and more organized than any guy’s room I’ve entered.” I didn’t want to appear rude so I left her on the seat and sat on the edge of my bed. I asked about her mission and she said, “Oh nothing. I came to see you and maybe help you finish your weekend chores. Don’t you have anything to wash?”
I felt like laughing but this stint of anger took over me. I was asking myself questions and the answers that came made me angrier. I told her to leave before my girlfriend comes over. She answered, “It’s that girl I want to see. I need to tell her about the dream too and if she’s a Christian who understands the power of dreams, she would understand me and back off.” It was beginning to feel like madness. I looked at her critically and the questions that came from my mouth were, “Annette, are you alright? Have you suffered some form of accident recently? Have you seen a doctor or a psychologist recently? You don’t sound right. You don’t act like the Ann I know.”
She took it the wrong way and got angry but I didn’t care. She said, “Do I look like a sick lady to you? You better humble yourself and allow God to take us where he wants to take us. Don’t harden your heart because God is mighty.”
Her behaviour worried me so much that I started talking to her other siblings asking them if they’d seen any weird behaviour from her. They were all surprised that I was asking that question. “Our sister is fine. She’s the same person, nothing has changed.”
For days, I didn’t hear from her. I was relieved, thinking that would end the drama about dreams. Then my girlfriend started sending me screenshots. She asked, “What’s going on here? Who is this one and when did she come onto the scene?” I read the whole screenshots repeatedly and asked myself, “What has come over this girl? What gave her the audacity to reach out to my girlfriend? How did she even get her number?” In one line she said, “He won’t marry you no matter the canal sins you commit with him. Find your way out before the end breaks your heart.” In another line, she said, “You’re wasting your time. Tell him I told you that.”
I tried all I could to calm my girlfriend down. She believed her. I told her, “Call Annette and ask why she’s saying that. Just call her and ask. Don’t assume.” She Called. I was on the phone on a conference call but Annette didn’t know it. My girlfriend asked her, “I want to know why you said all that. What do you have with him? Is he cheating on us?” She answered, “I’ve seen the future, that’s why I’m warning you to stay away. You’ll break your heart if you don’t listen to me.” My girlfriend asked, “How did you see the future? Are you a seer?” She answered, “God revealed it to me in my dreams. He’s aware of it and trying to play ball with God but none of us can stand in God’s way.”
My girlfriend laughed and I laughed. When she realized I was on the phone too, she cut the line. My girlfriend asked me, “Do you think she’s normal? She speaks like a false prophet. You better report her to the police before she does something stupid.”
I didn’t report her to the police. I informed her parents. I showed them the messages. I told them everything she had ever said to me. They were shocked. Her mother laughed. She asked me, “Young man, are you serious about what you’re saying?” I answered, “Mom, I just showed you screenshots. I can’t lie.” They told me they’ll talk to her and for a very long time I didn’t hear from her again so I thought they’ve succeeded in calming her down or she had been given medical help until recently she has started sending me messages again; “Dear Ray, I’m sorry about everything. Maybe I’m going about it wrongly but you have to believe me and also pray about it. Why can’t you do such a simple thing? Is it too hard for you to talk to God?”
I sent a screenshot of the message to my girlfriend. She said, “If you won’t report her to the police and get a restraining order, don’t talk to me about her again. It looks like you enjoy the attention she’s giving you so go ahead and leave me out of it.” Maybe I will listen to my girlfriend eventually but I want to know if anyone here has experienced something of this nature before or has heard about something of this nature before. I know it’s not normal but is there anything I can do to help her?”
