Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio has thanked his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron for his “warm hospitality” during a meeting in France, where the two leaders committed to deepening relations between their nations.
In a statement released on May 15th following the talks, President Bio said “At our momentous meeting, we committed to deepening relations between our two friendly countries and broadening cooperation and collaboration on a wide-range of regional and global issues.”
The meeting comes amid efforts by both nations to strengthen bilateral ties across various spheres, including trade, security, development assistance and environmental protection.
No specific details were provided on the areas of cooperation discussed or any agreements reached during the meeting in Paris. However, President Bio’s public gratitude for Macron’s “warm hospitality” indicates a positive tone around discussions to chart a new era of engagement between their nations.
Relations between the West African nation and the European economic power have been cordial but relatively limited in recent decades compared to France’s engagement with some other regional powers.
President Bio, who took office in 2018, has made attracting investment for Sierra Leone’s economy and infrastructure a key priority alongside reforms in education, healthcare and governing institutions.
His French counterpart Macron is likely keen to bolster France’s influence across West Africa amid competition from other global powers, including rising interests from Russia and China.
