President Alassane Ouattara expressed his enthusiasm for the annual Abidjan International Book Fair (SILA) which is currently underway in the nation’s economic capital.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, President Ouattara highlighted the fair’s importance to Ivorian culture and literacy efforts.
“On the occasion of the Abidjan International Book Fair, an unmissable annual event for reading enthusiasts, I was very happy to interact with authors and professionals in the book sector,” President Ouattara said during opening ceremonies.
SILA has become one of the largest and most prestigious book fairs in West Africa. The 10-day event features hundreds of exhibitors, panel discussions, author readings, and creative competitions.
This year’s fair, which runs until May 26th at the Abidjan Convention Center is expected to attract over 200,000 visitors.
Leading Ivorian authors are headlining the festival’s lineup of special guests. Several international authors from other countries are also slated to participate.
President Ouattara’s remarks highlighted SILA’s importance as an annual celebration of literature, publishing, and the vibrant cultural fabric of Ivory Coast. His attendance underscores the government’s recognition of the book fair as a marquee national event.
In addition to the main exhibition halls, SILA 2024 will also feature spaces dedicated to children’s reading, a scientific books pavilion, and areas for arts & crafts.
