South African activist, Nhlanhla Lux has alleged that there has been looting at shops around Soweto due to the national shutdown on Monday, 20 March.
“Looting is a reality, shops are being bombed, ATMs are being targeted and this is supposed to be a peaceful demonstration apparently by so-called politicians,” Lux said.
“I wonder what is store for accountability for these politicians that run sack our country and making sure that the poorest of people suffer from their political nonsense,” the activist added.
Last month, EFF leader Julius Malema vowed that his organisation would bring South Africa to a standstill.
“Fighters, the militancy and protest character of the EFF, the fearless character, the ground forces of the EFF, your determination to liberate the people of South Africa is going to be seen on 20 March, when you bring South Africa to a standstill,” said Malema.
However, the call was received with mixed emotions with some citizens, political parties and businesses being for the national shutdown and some not.
Nhlanhla Lux has encouraged members of society to open cases against Julius Malema should any of their livelihoods be disrupted by the National Shutdown.
“If you get a medical emergency like gogo getting a heart attack on the 20th of March 2023 and an ambulance doesn’t arrive because roads are blocked by the EFF, go open an attempted murder or murder charge against Julius Malema. Sue him and build your family a house with that money,” he advised.
The government has also despatched police and military officers around the country to ensure the safety of the citizens.
The EFF has spoken against the government’s decision to dispatch military forces around the country saying that their march will be a peaceful one.
