South Africa has congratulated Algeria on its recent presidential election, praising the country’s commitment to democracy.
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune secured re-election as leader of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria in a vote held on 7 September 2024.
The South African government commended Algeria’s National Independent Electoral Authority and other stakeholders for ensuring a peaceful electoral process.
In a statement, the South African Presidency said: “The South African Government reiterates its commitment to continue working in solidarity with the Government and people of Algeria to strengthen bilateral relations for the mutual benefit of the two countries, to build strong people-to-people ties, and collaborate in the consolidation of the African Agenda.”
The two nations share a history of struggle against colonialism and apartheid. Since South Africa’s transition to democracy in 1994, bilateral cooperation has strengthened, culminating in a Bi-National Commission co-chaired by both presidents.
South Africa views the successful election as evidence of Algeria’s dedication to upholding democratic principles both domestically and across Africa.
