PRETORIA, South Africa – South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has suspended Deputy Minister of Small Business Development, Ms. Elizabeth Dipuo Peters, for one month without pay due to an ethics violation.
In a written statement on Thursday, Ramaphosa informed Peters of his decision to suspend her, following a sanction adopted by Parliament’s Joint Committee on Ethics and Members Interests.
Ramaphosa’s office stated that the suspension comes after extensive parliamentary review of Peters’ ethical conduct while Transport Minister between 2012 and 2019.
The committee found that Peters breached the Code of Ethical Conduct during her previous role as Minister of Transport, according to a statement by the Union Buildings.
As a result, she was sanctioned with a one-month suspension with no salary nor benefits during this period.
The suspension became effective February 28, 2024 and will conclude on March 28, 2024.
“The suspension, which will be without pay, became effective on 28 February 2024 and will end on 28 March 2024,” the statement says.
The specific nature of the conduct breach was not disclosed.
Peters has been Deputy Minister of Small Business Development since March 2023. She previously served as Minstrer for Energy and Transport Minister under former President Jacob Zuma.
