Paul Mashatile, South Africa’s deputy president, has set out key priorities for the country’s seventh parliament since the end of apartheid.
Speaking to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), Mr Mashatile emphasised the need for integrated planning across all levels of government to tackle poverty and inequality.
He called for a focus on economic growth, job creation and improving public services.
The deputy president, who serves as leader of government business in parliament, pledged that the executive would be accountable to both houses.
Mr Mashatile highlighted 2024 as marking 70 years since the adoption of the Women’s Charter, urging action on gender-based violence and women’s empowerment.
He also announced plans for a new Medium-Term Development Plan to guide policy over the next five years.
The speech comes as South Africa’s political parties work to form a government of national unity following recent elections.
