The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has kicked off special voting today, Monday, May 27th 2024, allowing select groups of voters to cast their ballots ahead of South Africa’s highly anticipated national and provincial elections scheduled for this Wednesday, May 29th.
The two-day special voting period, which runs until tomorrow Tuesday May 28th, allows the IEC to process these ballots separately before Wednesday’s main event when millions more South Africans will vote at over 20,000 polling stations nationwide.
In a post on its official channels, the IEC reminded eligible special voters: “Have you applied? Don’t forget your ID and vote where registered. Voting stations are open from 9AM-5PM, including home visits.”
Special voting accommodates those unable to visit a polling station on the main election day, such as voters with immobility, those in hospitals or care facilities, and security forces personnel safeguarding the electoral process.
The IEC is urging approved special voters to carry valid ID documents and exercise their constitutional right at their designated special voting station. Those who applied for home visits can expect IEC officials to arrive at their residence.
“Take a sneak peek into the voting process before heading to your station or casting your vote at home,” the IEC advised, pointing voters to online resources demonstrating proper voting procedures.
The pivotal May 29th elections will determine the next National Assembly as well as provincial legislatures that will elect premiers. It is a crucial test for the ruling African National Congress (ANC) party and opposition parties.
As it manages the first phase, the IEC reiterated its core message: “Remember, one ballot, one cross” – reminding voters to make one mark next to their preferred party on the national ballot.
With special voting now running, South Africa enters the final stretch before elections that could reshape its political landscape. Ensuring a free, fair and peaceful process is the IEC’s priority over the next three days.
