Namibia launches APRM Country review report

Welcomes initiative to mobilize funding towards augmenting national resources in the implementation of the National Plan of Action

President Nangolo Mbumba officially launched Namibia’s African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) Country Review Report during a ceremony held at State House, underscoring the government’s commitment to enhancing governance and socio-economic development.

It comes along with plans of establishing a permanent National Secretariat to continue coordinating APRM activities and programmes in the country thereby ensuring the full implementation of the National Plan of Action,

Addressing attendees, President Mbumba expressed his honor in presiding over the launch of Namibia’s inaugural APRM report, hailing it as a clear testimony of the nation’s dedication to strengthening its governance architecture through robust processes, systems, and institutions.

“The launch of this Report is a clear testimony of the Namibian government’s commitment to enhancing the country’s governance architecture by strengthening processes, systems and institutions as a means of delivering socio-economic development,” the President said in his address.

In September 2020, the National Governing Council commenced the Country Self- Assessment Report, which paved the way for the APRM to conduct a fully-fledged Peer Review of the Republic of Namibia in 2021.

“In this context I would like to thank the University of Namibia for conducting a credible Country Self-Assessment Report, which was a critical component in the country’s preparedness to conduct the full Base Review Report.”

The APRM Country Review Report provides a comprehensive assessment of Namibia’s governance landscape, identifying areas of strength and opportunities for improvement across various domains, including political, economic, and corporate governance practices.

In a resounding affirmation of Namibia’s dedication to the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) process, President Nangolo Mbumba underscored the nation’s resolve to effectively integrate the recommendations outlined in the recently launched Country Review Report into existing sectoral strategies and plans.

“While launching the Country Review Report is important, the measure of success will be how Namibia effectively integrates the recommendations of the Country Review Report, into existing sectoral strategies and Plans,” he said.

“I therefore welcome the initiative by the Continental Secretariat to mobilize funding towards augmenting national resources in the implementation of the National Plan of Action.”

The African Peer Review Mechanism is a groundbreaking initiative of the African Union, aimed at fostering good governance practices among member states by ensuring adherence to agreed-upon political, economic, and corporate governance values, codes, and standards. Its ultimate objective is to accelerate the achievement of the AU’s Agenda 2063 for sustainable development across the continent.

The launch event was attended by senior government officials, representatives from the APRM Continental Secretariat, members of the diplomatic corps, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders, underscoring the significance of this milestone for Namibia’s governance journey.
