Ghana’s hopes of reaching the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations suffered a major setback at home as they were beaten 4-2 by The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The Black Stars, who had not won in seven previous qualifiers, appeared to be in control after taking a 2-0 lead inside the opening half-hour.
Ernest Nuamah opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Felix Afena-Gyan doubled the advantage with a well-taken free-kick.
But the Scorpions responded before the interval. Assan Ceesay reduced the deficit from the penalty spot and captain Omar Colley levelled to make it 2-2 at half-time.
The Gambia continued to press after the break and completed the turnaround when Colley struck for a second time to put the visitors 3-2 ahead.
Ghana pushed for an equaliser but left spaces in defence, and Colley sealed a memorable victory on the counter-attack in stoppage time to complete his hat-trick.
It is The Gambia’s first victory over Ghana in 33 years and gives them back-to-back wins in Group C, having beaten Somalia 2-1 in their opening fixture.
For Ghana, the defeat leaves them bottom of the group without a point after two matches, following a 2-0 loss to Ivory Coast in Bouake five days earlier.
The result extends their winless run in Africa Cup of Nations qualifying to eight matches, including six games without a win during the failed campaign for the 2025 tournament.
