Morocco are through to the round of 32, but they were made to work far harder than anyone anticipated by a Haiti side with nothing left to lose and everything to prove.
Morocco twice came from behind against a team playing on football’s biggest stage for the first time in 52 years before eventually pulling clear through second-half substitutes Soufiane Rahimi and Gessime Yassine in what was a breathless six-goal contest in Atlanta.
Haiti took the lead inside ten minutes when Lenny Joseph finished a fine team move, the goal later credited as a Yassine Bounou own goal. Morocco levelled through Achraf Hakimi, but Wilson Isidor smashed in a stunning second for Haiti with a shot that flew into the top-left corner from outside the box — arguably the goal of the tournament. Ismael Saibari swept Hakimi’s cross past the goalkeeper in stoppage time to make it 2-2 at the break — his third goal of the tournament.
The second half was tighter, but Morocco’s greater quality ultimately told. Rahimi controlled the ball from a corner and fired past the goalkeeper in the 78th minute, and Yassine added a fourth in the 89th to kill the contest. A VAR check confirmed the ball had remained in play.
Morocco advance in second place behind Brazil in Group C and will face the Netherlands in the round of 32. Midfielder El Khannouss was honest about the first half. “At times we lacked humility and paid the price for it,” he said. Haiti coach Migné was proud regardless: “We wanted to leave with our heads held high, and that’s exactly what we’ve done.”
