Former Al Ahly defender Wael Gomaa has criticised the Cairo giants after their recent defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns.
The Red Devils were beaten 5-2 by Mamelodi Sundowns in the fourth round of the CAF Champions League on Saturday.
The defeat meant that Al Ahly now must win their remaining two group-stage games in addition to Al Hilal not beating Sundowns in Sudan if they want to make it through.
Wael Gomaa spoke after the game and vented his frustration, slamming Al Ahly’s players as well as the club’s management.
“We were expecting a better reaction from the players after conceding,” Gomaa told beIN Sports.
“This is the first time I watched Al Ahly losing a game and just wished the referee would blow his whistle to end the game before full-time.
“There are no excuses for such a result. Everyone at this club should be held accountable. There is no fight, no spirit.
“The only one fighting for the ball was Percy Tau. But there are so many mistakes and the board did not back the manager with enough signings.
“There are players who play every week at this club and don’t deserve their spot because there’s no competition in this team.
“I was once the best defender in Africa and I was always afraid of sitting on the bench for the next game,” he added.
The 47-year-old also talked about former Al Ahly head coach Pitso Mosimane and made a claim about the South African manager.
“People will bring back the discussion about Mosimane,” Gomaa continued. “I am only talking about football here, but there are other things about him that are beyond the technical aspects of the game and I don’t want to talk about them.”
