Ambassador of Korea to Egypt Hong Jin-wook met with Egyptian Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Ahmed Issa on Sunday to exchange opinions on the current bilateral cooperation in tourism and cultural heritage, and to reconfirm further governmental support to enhance people-to-people exchanges between the two countries.
Ambassador Hong stated that Egypt’s travel advisory level for Korean citizens was lowered last August for the first time in 8 years, and direct flights between Korea and Egypt are expected to resume this year, which already attracts a great number of tourists to Egypt. According to Ambassador Hong, based on the memorandum of understanding signed between the two countries in January 2022, the Korean government provided $13.6m to cultural heritage restoration projects of Egypt, such as restoring the pylon of Ramesseum Temple in Luxor and digitizing documentary heritage. Ambassador Hong expressed his conviction that this measure will contribute to a better understanding between the two people, which will lead to advanced people-to-people exchange that will work as the cornerstone for making our bilateral relations sustainable.
Minister Issa expressed his gratitude toward the Korean government and the embassy for promoting active people-to-people exchange and caring for the valuable cultural assets of Egypt. He suggested providing possible support for the convenience and safety of Korean tourists, hoping that this would lead to further progress in bilateral relations.
Ambassador Hong and Minister Issa agreed in this meeting to communicate closely to find effective ways to further the people-to-people exchange between the two countries.
