The South African Police Service (SAPS) has issued a warning to all foreign nationals that they are required to carry their passports with them at all times. Failure to produce documentation when requested during spot checks could result in being arrested for being undocumented, according to SAPS Major General Mbuso Khumalo as reported by Briefly.
50 individuals who were identified as undocumented foreigners were apprehended at a roadblock during “Operation Okae Molao” in Fourways, Johannesburg, prompting the South African Police Service (SAPS) to issue a warning.
During an interview with local radio station POWER, Khumalo also identified Fourways as a crime hotspot. The Minister of Home Affairs, Aaron Motsoaledi, gave SAPS the go-ahead to check foreigners’ documentation last year. However, he cautioned against using discriminatory methods to verify their status in the country.
The warning serves as a reminder to all foreign nationals residing in South Africa to ensure they have the necessary documentation at all times. It also highlights the need for the SAPS and other law enforcement agencies to increase their efforts to combat crime and illegal immigration.
