The World Bank has agreed to provide Morocco $350 million additional funding to support the country’s social protection system, especially AMO-TADAMON destined for vulnerable populations (women, children & people with disabilities) and isolated populations in rural or remote areas.
The new loan comes after the $400 million disbursed in 2020 to mitigate the impacts of COVID-19 crisis by supporting vulnerable households and the Kingdom’s social protection initiatives.
According to a WB press release issued Monday, the additional financing supports Morocco’s universal Family Allowance program and strengthens the social safety net system in the medium term.
“This Additional Financing supports the operationalization of key parts of the Kingdom’s social protection reform, paving the way for a modern social protection system to make growth more inclusive”, says Jesko Hentschel, WB Country Director for the Maghreb.
It will help Morocco’s government to implement the new health insurance non-contributory program for poor and vulnerable households. It will also enhance the information system of social assistance programs for vulnerable groups, including persons living with disabilities.
The additional funding will help ensure a seamless transition from existing cash transfer programs into the universal Family Allowance program and support AMO-TADAMON system – a key pillar for protecting households – especially the most vulnerable – against health risks, which are expected to be exacerbated by the impacts of climate change.
