A tragic incident shook the Turkish city of Istanbul today as a Moroccan citizen lost his life after being attacked by a taxi driver, Turkish news outlet Zaman reported.

The incident occurred when the taxi driver refused to drive the 57-year-old Moroccan man to his destination due to what he claimed was a “short distance.” The situation escalated further when the driver exited his vehicle and started attacking the victim.

The Moroccan man, who had been residing in Turkey for approximately 13 years, was physically assaulted by the taxi driver in a shocking incident captured on video.

The attack resulted in the victim falling to the ground, leading to a fatal head injury and subsequent bleeding. The victim was transferred to the hospital before he passed away from his injuries.

Speaking to the Al Hurra news outlet, the Head of the Moroccan Community Council in Turkey, Ayoub Salem, condemned the killing of the Moroccan man, and the circumstances that led to it.

“How can such an issue lead to the killing of a person?” Salem questioned, noting the common reluctance of Istanbul taxi drivers to take passengers on short trips that they consider economically unprofitable.

He expressed deep concern over the circumstances surrounding the incident and the potential impact it could have on the perception of the country.

Salem revealed that the council was actively collaborating with the Moroccan consulate to monitor the situation closely.

Reports indicated that the perpetrator was initially placed “under house arrest” pending investigations, but Salem contested that the police had surprisingly released him during the investigation phase.

This turn of events has sparked shock, raising questions about the justice system’s handling of such cases.

Salem emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the matter, urging Turkish authorities to shed light on the incident and hold the perpetrator accountable.

The victim’s family, along with civil society organizations, echoed this sentiment and called for justice to be served.

The incident comes amid rising concerns over mistreatment and negative experiences faced by foreigners in Turkey, notably those of Arab descent.

The recent controversial deportation of two Moroccan nationals to northern Syria by Turkish authorities has exacerbated concerns over the treatment of tourists based on their appearance or ethnicity.

The incident has cast a shadow over Turkey’s reputation as a welcoming tourist destination, prompting a strong reaction from Moroccans.
