The American Chamber of Commerce in Morocco (AmCham) has stepped forward with a generous donation of $6 million to support earthquake relief efforts in the country.

This contribution aims to provide much-needed aid and assistance to those affected by the recent devastating earthquake that struck some regions of Morocco.

Recognising the urgent need for assistance in the affected areas, AmCham, representing companies from various sectors, including finance, technology, energy, and more, has come together to contribute to the recovery and rebuilding efforts.

The organisation believes in the importance of corporate social responsibility and aims to make a positive impact on the communities in which its members operate.

“In the wake of the recent earthquake that shook the Al Houz and Taroudant regions, we at AmCham Morocco extend our deepest condolences to those affected by this devastating natural disaster,” the chamber said in a press statement.

The earthquake, measuring a magnitude of 6.8 on the Richter scale, caused widespread destruction and claimed many lives. Thousands of people have been displaced, and numerous communities are grappling with the aftermath of this natural disaster.

The contributions reached over $6 million in monetary donations and over $2 million in essentials like food, hygiene products, water, drinks, medications, tents, blankets, and other in-kind services such as free money transfers by Western Union or free transportation by UPS.

The $6 million donation by AmCham will be crucial in providing immediate relief to those affected by the earthquake. The funds will be used for essential supplies such as food, water, blankets, and medical aid. Additionally, the donation will support the long-term rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts, including the rebuilding of infrastructure, schools, and homes that have been damaged or destroyed.

“This will undoubtedly make a significant difference in the lives of those impacted,” the press statement added.

The statement emphasized the organization’s commitment to standing with Morocco during this challenging time and aiding in the recovery process.

AmCham donation comes after several American and Moroccan companies made donations, including the American Express Foundation, Boeing, Cisco, Ford, and GEHealthcare.

Also, Johnson & Johnson, Lear, Mastercard, UPS, Visa, and Polydesign Systems also made donations to organizations like Bank Al-Maghrib, the Red Cross and Red Crescent, and Foundation High Atlas, according to a report by moroccoworldnews.com.

It adds that the highest monetary contribution came from the Coca-Cola Company, Equatorial Coca-Cola Bottling Company, and SBGS, who made a collective donation of $2.6 million to Bank Al-Maghrib, Mohamed V Foundation, the IFRC, and Care International.

The Moroccan government has expressed its gratitude for the substantial contribution from AmCham. The donation will significantly enhance ongoing relief operations and provide much-needed support to the affected regions. The government also commended AmCham for its dedication to corporate social responsibility and its role in fostering strong ties between American businesses and the local community.

This charitable act by the American Chamber of Commerce in Morocco serves as an exemplary model of international solidarity during times of crisis. The donation not only reinforces the bond between the American business community and Morocco but also highlights the importance of collective efforts in supporting disaster-stricken areas and helping affected regions rebuild their lives.
