Ghanaian football club Hearts of Oak has announced their decision to part ways with their under-performing coach, Martinus Koopman, following a series of disappointing results under the 67-year-old Dutchman.

It comes at the back of a 0-0 draw with Legon Cities on Sunday, where he defiantly stated that he wasn’t concerned about being sacked.

The club’s management made the difficult but necessary decision to seek new leadership in order to revive the team’s performance, as the Dutchman failed to build a formidable side worthy of Hearts status as giants in Ghana Premier League history.

After just 10 matches into the season, which comprised of 2 wins, 6 draws, and 2 losses, Hearts of Oak found themselves falling short of their fans’ expectations as they sit at the 11th position on the league log.

Although the team displayed occasional flashes of brilliance, their overall consistency and ability to secure victories fell below the desired standard.

A statement released by the club on Tuesday said the decision to let go of Koopman is part of the club’s “grand aim of restructuring the technical team” moving forward in the 2023–24 football season.

Koooman had earlier attributed the club’s poor start to the absence of a quality striker, criticising the management for not providing him with sufficient quality resources.

But upon careful evaluation and deliberation, the club’s management determined that a change was necessary to reinvigorate the team and restore their winning spirit. While acknowledging Koopman’s dedication and efforts, the decision was reached in the best interest of both the club and its supporters.

Hearts of Oak, known for their passionate fanbase and rich history, are determined to regain their winning edge.

The search for a new coach has already begun, with the club actively seeking a candidate who can harness the team’s full potential and bring about the desired results, while assistant coach Abdul Rahim Bashiru has been appointed as the acting head coach until further notice.
