ACCRA, Ghana – Ghana’s fastest man, Benjamin Azamati Kwaku, has confirmed he will represent the host nation at the 2023 African Games in Accra this March, feeling “thrilled” to be part of the biggest Sports festival in the continent.
Azamati, who holds the national 100m record of 9.97 seconds, made the announcement in a social media video on Tuesday. “I am thrilled to share that I will be representing our nation in the African Games this March right here in Accra,” he said.
“This is a call to all of you to come out in full force and support us.”
The sprinter called on Ghanaians to come out in full force and cheer on the national team. “Let’s unite and cheer for Ghana. See you soon,” he added.
The 13th edition of the African Games will take place from March 4-18, 2023 in Ghana’s capital city. Azamati’s participation is a major boost for the host nation.
The 26-year-old is considered one of Africa’s fastest rising athletic stars. He reached the semifinals in the 100m and 200m at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Azamati in March 2021, broke 22-year national record held by Leo Myles Mills with a time of 9.97 seconds.
Shattering his own national record, Azamati again clocked a blistering 9.90 seconds in the 100m dash at a Texas meet in March 2022, tying him with Trayvon Bromell as the 4th fastest collegiate sprinter of all time.
He will be aiming to improve on that mark when he competes at the African Games in front of a home crowd.
Ghana will host the 13th edition of the African Games from March 8th to 23rd, 2024.
The African Games will feature over 6,500 athletes from 54 African nations competing in 22 sports. It is the biggest multi-sport event in Africa and will provide valuable competition for the continent’s top athletes ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics.
