A late goal from DR Congo substitute Katompa Mvumpa saw Morocco held to a 1-1 draw in their Africa Cup of Nations clash on Sunday, delaying the tournament favorites’ qualification to the knockout stages.
Morocco took the lead in the 6th minute through a superb solo goal from right-back Achraf Hakimi. The PSG star showcased his speed and skill to breeze past two defenders on the right flank before unleashing a rising shot into the far corner.
Buoyed by the early goal, Morocco controlled possession and looked comfortable, even without creating many clear-cut chances. DR Congo struggled to mount any threatening attacks in the first half.
Morocco almost doubled their advantage right after halftime but Ayoub El Kaabi’s header was saved off the line by the DR Congo keeper.
As the game wore on, DR Congo’s fresh legs off the bench began to influence proceedings. In the 75th minute, their pressure finally told when substitute Mvumpa rose highest to powerfully head in a cross and equalize for DR Congo.
Morocco pushed hard for a winner in the closing stages but DR Congo held firm, defending tenaciously to earn a valuable point.
The 1-1 draw keeps Morocco top of Group F with 4 points but delays their progression. DR Congo sits second with 2 points heading into the final set of group games.
Morocco will need at least a draw against Zambia in their last match to book their spot in the knockout round. The Atlas Lions came into AFCON 2023 as one of the tournament favorites, but have not yet hit top gear.
