Niger staged a spirited comeback to hold Ghana to a 1-1 draw in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Berkane, Morocco.
The Mena, ranked 125th in the FIFA Men’s World Rankings, showed remarkable resilience against the 64th-ranked Black Stars, fighting back to secure a valuable point in Group F.
Ghana broke the deadlock just before half-time when Alidu Seidu’s effort from outside the box took a deflection and found its way past Niger goalkeeper Naïm Van Attenhoven.
However, Niger’s persistence paid off in the 81st minute. The home side won a corner, and Victorien Adebayor rose highest to head home the equaliser, sending the Nigerien supporters into raptures.
The result leaves both teams with one point from their opening two matches. Niger had lost their first game against Sudan, while Ghana suffered defeat in their opener against Angola at home.
Despite the rankings gap, Niger matched their opponents throughout the contest. Van Attenhoven put in a commendable performance, denying Ghana’s best chances which fell to Mohammed Kudus and Inaki Williams.
Niger manager Cavalli Jean-Michel will be pleased with his side’s fighting spirit, particularly after the disappointment of their opening defeat.
For Ghana, the result will feel like two points dropped. Coach Chris Hughton will need to address his team’s inability to hold onto their lead as they prepare for their next qualifier against Sudan in October.
Niger, buoyed by this result, will look to build on this performance when they face Angola in their next group match.
