The African Union (AU) has joined in celebrating Eritrean cyclist Biniam Girmay’s historic green jersey win at the Tour de France, days after his triumphant return back home.
Girmay made history on 21 July by becoming the first Black African rider to win the green jersey at the Tour de France.
The 24-year-old Intermarché-Wanty team member clinched the prestigious points classification with a total of 387 points, besting seasoned sprinters Jasper Philipsen and Bryan Coquard.
He received a warm welcome on Wednesday from thousands of Asmara residents lining the streets. The celebration at Bahti Meskerem Square, attended by senior Government and PFDJ officials, members of the diplomatic community, and numerous nationals, featured cultural and artistic performances.
Girmay’s landmark victory marks the first time a Black rider has won any classification in the Tour’s 121-year history. It also represents Africa’s maiden green jersey triumph.
Upon crossing the finish line in Nice, Girmay was met by throngs of Eritrean supporters, their chants of “Bini, Bini, Bini” echoing through the streets.
In a statement, the AU said: “TeamAfrica continues to celebrate Biniam Girmay’s historic Green Jersey win at the Tour de France. While the homecoming celebrations have ended, the victory continues to inspire us all.”
Girmay received a hero’s welcome upon his return to Eritrea. Thousands lined the streets of Asmara as he made his way from the international airport to Bahti Meskerem Square.
The celebration featured cultural performances and was attended by senior government officials and members of the diplomatic community.
The AU has called for sustained support for cycling across Africa, saying: “Let’s keep the momentum going and support cycling across the continent!”
Girmay’s victory is expected to boost interest in professional cycling throughout Africa, potentially paving the way for more African riders to compete at the sport’s highest level.
