Accra, Ghana – The Swiss Alisa Hotel in Accra is hosting a special scrabble competition this Saturday for players aged 50 and above dubbed Alisa Veterans Invitational Scrabble, the Scrabble Association of Ghana (SCAG) has announced.
It comes from a partnership agreement between the Association and Alisa Hotel, which hosted scrabble’s debut participation in the 13th African Games held last month in Accra.
“The event will be held at the Asante Hall, Alisa Hotel on Saturday 27th April 2024,” said an official statement issued by the Association.
“The tournament will start at 9am. Eight games will be played in total. Sponsorship for this event was provided by Alisa Hotel and Media Majique.”
The Alisa Hotel is gradually becoming a citadel of Ghana’s advancement and development of the scrabble game.
It hosted the three-day scrabble competition for the African Games and is billed to host the venue if Ghana wins the bid to host the 2025 World Scrabble Championship.
Speaking about Saturday’s competition, the president of the Ghana Scrabble Association, Mr. Haruna Adamu, commended Alisa Hotel’s ongoing involvement in scrabble in the country.
“Their support is invaluable in elevating the prestige of our sport,” he said.
“Scrabble has been gaining tremendous popularity across all ages in Ghana,” Adamu said.
“We are delighted that Alisa Hotel has embraced the game and is providing a platform to celebrate our senior players who have kept the tradition alive over the decades.”
“We look forward to more collaborations that can continue raising scrabble’s profile nationwide.”
The Veterans Invitational competition is expected to draw senior scrabble enthusiasts from across the Greater Accra Region and beyond.
In expressing his excitement about the steady growth of the game in the country, Mr. Adamu noted that Saturday’s event will showcase the skill and strategic thinking required to excel at the highest levels of scrabble.
“The players we’ll see on Saturday have dedicated their lives to mastering this game. Their experience and dedication are an inspiration, and we expect some truly exciting matches,” he added.
The Alisa Veterans Invitational Scrabble comes as reinforcement to Ghana’s passion for the classic wordgame while honoring its most seasoned players.
