ACCRA, Ghana – Ghanaian soccer legend Asamoah Gyan has been handed a political appointment by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the 2024 general elections, being tasked to lead the party’s manifesto committee on youth and sports policy.
This comes just few days after Gyan was rumoured to be the next assistant coach for the Black Stars national team.
He has however been named in the Committee by the Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who faces a though test in the 2024 presidential election.
Out of 19 party members selected for the committee, Gyan will play a key role in shaping the NPP’s youth and sports policies for its 2024 campaign manifesto.
According to a statement from Dr. Bawumia’s campaign team, the committee “shall be responsible for undertaking a holistic review of the party’s 2016 and 2020 manifestos and engaging all relevant stakeholders to come up with a pragmatic 2024 manifesto.”
Gyan had earlier attended a national address on February 7th delivered by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who outlined his plans if voted into power.
Last year, rumours had circulated about Gyan’s potential candidacy in the parliamentary primaries of the NPP for the Bortianor Ngleshie-Amanfro constituency after an artwork of a billboard displaying his image went viral on social media, but he denied having any political ambition at the time.
Gyan, Ghana’s all-time top goal scorer and former national team captain, retired from soccer in 2019 after an illustrious career.
The political appointment provides him an opportunity to impact Ghana’s youth and sports landscape through policy initiatives.
