The president of African Union Moussa Faki Mahamat says he has been monitoring the situation in Senegal and calls on parties to drink from one peace cup.
There are reports of riots resulting from yesterday’s ruling which a Senegalese court sentenced opposition leader Ousmane Sonko for immortality to two years jail term. This decision has generated protests of which about nine lives has been lost.
The President of the Commission said he is “following very closely the events in Senegal, the violence that caused the deaths of men in particular, strongly condemns such violence and calls for its immediate cessation”.
“He calls on all political actors to observe the greatest restraint and to avoid such acts that tarnish the face of Senegalese democracy of which Africa has always been proud”.
“He calls for respect for the right of citizens to exercise their rights of freedom of expression and demonstration”, the statement added.
He also urged all citizens to respect the order and force of the law.
He therefor, encourages to “invites all actors to favor the paths of dialogue to overcome all their differences, whatever they may be”.
