Ghanaian Medeama SC settled for a 1-1 draw against Tanzanian giants Yanga SC in the CAF Champions League played at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi on Friday December 8.
Medeama drew first blood in the 27th minute when striker Jonathan Sowah confidently converted a well-deserved penalty.
This came after Derrick Fordjour displayed remarkable speed, leaving defender Dickson Job trailing behind. Job resorted to bringing down Fordjour inside the box, resulting in a clear penalty. The referee promptly pointed to the spot and issued Job a cautionary yellow card.
Jonathan Sowah’s goal seemed to have given Medeama some urge in searching for their second victory in the competition.
However, Yanga responded admirably just nine minutes later. It was the Ivorian import Paçome Zouzoua who equalized for the visitors.
Zouzoua swiftly dispossessed Fordjour before bursting forward and unleashing a powerful left-footed strike from inside the area. The goal sent waves of excitement through the Yanga fans, who had traveled in large numbers to support their team.
In the remaining minutes, both teams continued to create chances, but neither managed to find the back of the net. It was a lively affair from start to finish, with end-to-end action keeping spectators on the edge of their seats.
The draw means that both teams will head into the second leg with everything to play for. Medeama will undoubtedly take comfort from their strong performance on home soil, while Yanga will be buoyed by their away goal advantage.
The Ghanaian side now sits at the 3rd position with 4 points just as their opponent CR Belouizdad who drew with leaders Al Ahly in Cairo.
Overall, the match provided an enthralling spectacle, showcasing the talent and competitive spirit of African football.
