Ghanaian club Dreams FC qualified for the knockout stage of the CAF Confederation Cup despite a dramatic 2-1 away loss to Nigeria’s Rivers United on Sunday, March 3, 2024.
Dreams took the lead in the 40th minute through a goal from Abdul Aziz Issah. But Rivers United equalized in the 61st minute with a strike from Echeta Ugonna Deputy.
The match seemed headed for a draw until Rivers scored deep into stoppage time. Enyinnaya Kadzi Godswill scored in the 90+10th minute to give Rivers a 2-1 victory, though replays showed it was not a penalty as initially indicated.
The loss was made worse for Dreams when defender Seth Agyeman was sent off with a red card in the 81st minute after a second bookable offense.
Despite the defeat, Dreams still finish top of Group C with 12 points due to a superior goal difference over Rivers United, who also end with 12 points.
Club Africain take third spot with 10 points while Académica Lobito prop up the group with just 1 point.
Dreams FC will now anxiously await the draw for the knockout stage as they look to advance further in their debut Confederation Cup campaign.
