The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced a financial commitment of $50,000 (£39,000) to each club participating in the preliminary stages of its top club competitions.
This move affects teams in the early rounds of both the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup.
The first preliminary round begins with matches scheduled for 16-18 August, with return legs from 23-25 August 2024. The second preliminary round will take place in September, with group stage places at stake.
CAF said in a statement: “This is the first time CAF offers financial assistance to Clubs in this stage of the Competition. Previously, Clubs needed to reach the Group Stages to be eligible to share the overall prize money.”
The initiative is part of CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe’s promise to improve club competitions and provide more financial assistance to clubs.
This financial support is expected to help smaller clubs manage the costs associated with continental competitions, potentially allowing for wider participation across African football.
