Nigeria’s Super Falcons suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Canada in their final preparation match before the 2024 Olympic Games. The friendly, held at La Quinta Football Centre in Malaga, Spain, saw the end of Nigeria’s impressive 15-game unbeaten run.
Canada started the match strongly and took the lead in the 18th minute. Despite creating several chances, the Super Falcons were unable to find an equalizer. Their closest opportunity came in the second half when Jennifer Echegini’s sweeping shot hit the post, leaving the Canadian goalkeeper stranded.
This loss marks Nigeria’s first defeat of 2024, following two wins and two draws against Cameroon and South Africa earlier in the year. It’s also their first loss over 90 minutes since a 1-0 defeat to Colombia in February 2023.
Nigeria’s starting lineup featured Chiamaka Nnadozie in goal, with a defense comprising Michelle Alozie, Chidinma Okeke, Oluwatosin Demehin, and Osinachi Ohale. The midfield saw Deborah Abiodun and Christy Ucheibe holding, with Jennifer Echegini and Toni Payne in more advanced roles. Chinwendu Ihezuo and Atletico Madrid’s Rasheedat Ajibade led the attack.
The Super Falcons now turn their attention to the Olympics, with their campaign set to begin in eight days. Their opening match will be against Brazil in Bordeaux, followed by encounters with Spain and Japan.
While the defeat ends their unbeaten run, it provides valuable experience against strong opposition as they prepare for the challenges ahead in Paris. The team will be looking to bounce back and make a strong start to their Olympic campaign.
