Comoros pulled off a massive upset victory over Ghana at Stade de Moroni , winning 1-0 at home to go top of Group I in 2026 World Cup qualifying.
Hertha Berlin striker Myziane Maolida became the star of the match as his brilliant solo goal in the 43rd minute was enough to win all three points to earn the island nation their second win in the qualifier.
Maolida produced a moment of magic on the stroke of halftime to decide the Group I contest in front of a raucous home crowd at Stade de Moroni. Picking up the ball midway inside Ghana’s half, the 24-year-old embarked on a dazzling dribble past three defenders before rifling the ball into the bottom corner.
Black Star striker Antoine Semenyo had missed one glorious opportunity to open the score before Maolida took his chance before halftime.
A stunned Ghanaian side struggled to mount much in response as Comoros sat deep and defended resolutely to protect their lead.
It was the Black Star’s second consecutive loss to Comoros after their 2021 Afcon 3-2 defeat in the group stage.
With the win, Comoros moves to the top of Group I with six points after their 4-2 win over the Central African Republic last Friday.
Mali follows with four points after draw with Central African Republic on Monday
while Madagascar sits in 3rd position with 3 points but a superior goal difference over Ghana who is also in 4th with 3 points after their last-gasp 1-0 win against Madagascar in Kumasi on Friday.
