FIBA Africa has confirmed the host cities for the 2025 AfroBasket Championships, with Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, securing the women’s tournament and Luanda, Angola, winning the right to host the men’s competition.
The women’s championship, scheduled for July 2025, will see Nigeria’s D’Tigress defend their title in the Ivorian capital. The men’s tournament will follow in August, bringing Africa’s top basketball talent to Angola’s coastal metropolis.
The announcement coincides with significant leadership changes within FIBA Africa’s operational structure. Mr Julien Farran has been appointed as the new Chief Operating Officer, succeeding the retiring Mr Yira Yacouba.
“These appointments and hosting decisions reflect our commitment to maintaining the highest standards of basketball administration and competition in Africa,” a FIBA Africa board member said. “Both Abidjan and Luanda have demonstrated their capability to host world-class sporting events.”
The selection of these host cities continues FIBA Africa’s strategy of rotating major tournaments among nations with proven infrastructure and organisational capacity. Both Côte d’Ivoire and Angola have previously hosted successful international basketball events, building confidence in their ability to deliver tournaments of this magnitude.
The 2025 championships are expected to feature enhanced broadcast coverage and digital integration, reflecting the growing global interest in African basketball. Organisers are already developing plans for fan engagement initiatives and community outreach programmes to maximise the tournaments’ impact.
