President Paul Kagame of Rwanda has held talks with top African basketball officials to explore ways of supporting women in sports and developing women’s basketball across the continent.
The meeting, which took place at Urugwiro Village in Kigali on Tuesday, followed the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup pre-qualifiers.
Mr Kagame met with Anibal Manave, president of FIBA Africa, and Alphonse Bilé, the organisation’s secretary-general. Also present were Clare Akamanzi, CEO of NBA Africa, and Amadou Gallo Fall, president of the Basketball Africa League (BAL).
The discussions centred on the importance of promoting women’s participation in sports and identifying opportunities to further develop women’s basketball in Africa.
This gathering of influential figures in African basketball underscores Rwanda’s growing role in the sport’s development on the continent. The country has previously hosted major basketball events, including games in the Basketball Africa League.
The talks come at a crucial time for women’s basketball in Africa, as the continent seeks to build on recent successes and increase its representation on the global stage.
