Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Davido took to social media to congratulate South African singer Tyla on her groundbreaking Grammy win for Best African Music Performance.
“Congratulations on your win @Tyllaaaaaaa! Big One for Africa! Keep soaring,” wrote Davido on X after Tyla made history as the first recipient of the new Grammy category at Sunday’s award ceremony.
Tyla, 22, took home the honor for her viral hit song “Water,” defeating several big names from the Afrobeats scene including Davido himself.
Both Davido and fellow Afrobeats giant Burna Boy also failed to win in other categories they were nominated in during the night.
However, Davido was quick to congratulate 22-year-old Tyla for her monumental achievement as the first African solo artist to win the award.
The Grammy win for Tyla’s crossover pop-Amapiano hit “Water” has been hailed as a major milestone for African music. Davido and other Afrobeats artists will no doubt be gunning to claim the prize next year.
