Ivory Coast marked their return to the World Cup after a 12-year absence with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ecuador in Group E at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Sunday after sensational youngster Amad Diallo come off the bench to deliver the decisive moment when it mattered most.

The Manchester United winger had not even started the match, left out of Emerse Faé’s opening line-up in a selection decision that raised eyebrows. He entered the fray in the 56th minute and within half an hour had written himself into Ivorian football history, side-footing a composed finish beyond goalkeeper Hernán Gálindez after a lung-bursting run down the right flank from Wilfried Singo, whose assist was every bit as impressive as the goal itself.

The result, however, flattered neither side. Ecuador were the dominant force in an opening half-hour that could easily have produced a different story entirely. John Yeboah struck the crossbar, Alan Minda struck it again, and Enner Valencia added a third blow to the woodwork early in the second half, as the South Americans squandered three golden opportunities to take the lead. Had Ecuador taken any one of those chances, Ivory Coast’s triumphant return would have had a far less comfortable ending.

Les Éléphants grew into the contest as the hour mark approached, their tactical changes giving them greater control in midfield and more presence in the final third. Faé’s decision to send on Diallo proved the masterstroke that settled the match.

Coach Faé was effusive in his praise for the goal and for the player who scored it. He described the assist from Singo as wonderful and the finish from Diallo as everything they had worked on in training. For Diallo, it was another moment of instinct and quality that has been the hallmark of a career steadily gathering momentum at club and international level.

For Ecuador, the defeat was painful in more ways than one. It ended an unbeaten run stretching across 19 matches and leaves them with work to do in a group that also contains Germany, who thrashed Curaçao 7-0 in their opener.

Ivory Coast face Germany next and will need to be considerably more disciplined defensively if they are to sustain their promising start.
