Ethiopia is preparing for another massive nationwide tree planting campaign aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and combating climate change, according to Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali.
Dubbed “Green Legacy” the project comes with full involvement of communities, schools, and organizations to ensure billions of trees are planted to combat deforestation, restore degraded landscapes, and increase the country’s forest cover
In his statement issued on Sunday, Ali said preparations are in full swing ahead of the tree planting campaign.
“As we approach this year’s Green Legacy planting season, preparations are in full swing. Planting sites are being prepared and seedlings continuously being cultivated.”
He described the Green Legacy program as “Our annual program, aimed at promoting environmental sustainability, combating climate change, reversing deforestation and reducing land degradation.”
The Prime Minister highlighted that it “involves communities, schools, and organizations working together to plant billions of trees.”
The Green Legacy initiative, launched in 2019, seeks to rehabilitate degraded landscapes, increase national forest cover, and mitigate the impacts of climate change through mass afforestation and reforestation efforts.
Last year, Ethiopians from all walks of life joined the drive by planting over 5 billion tree seedlings in a single day, setting a new world record.
This year’s planting season is expected to build on that success, with tree nurseries working overtime to raise the necessary seedlings for distribution to sites nationwide.
Environmental experts have lauded Ethiopia’s Green Legacy as a model for addressing deforestation, land degradation, biodiversity loss and climate change through ambitious afforestation goals.
