Ethiopian middle-distance runner Freweyni Hailu won the women’s 1500m event at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Glasgow on Sunday.
Hailu claimed gold in style, stopping the clock at 4:01.46 to see off the challenge from Americans Nikki Hiltz and Emily Mackay, who took silver and bronze in 4:02.32 and 4:02.69 respectively.
The women’s 1500m was the climax of the weekend’s action at the 2024 World Indoor Athletics Championships staged in the Scottish city of Glasgow from March 1st to 3rd.
The Ethiopian was coming into the event in red-hot form, having set the fourth fastest indoor 1500m in history and personal best at 3:53.09 at the 10th edition of the Copernicus Cup held in Torun, Poland last month.
She also won the women’s mile at the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold meeting in Ostrava, Czech Republic earlier in January, setting a meeting record and world leading time of 4:17.36.
The 23-year-old has quickly established herself as a force to be reckoned with over the 1500m distance, adding the world indoor title to the silver medal she won over 1 mile at the World Road Running Championships last year.
Her dominant performance in Glasgow caps an impressive indoor season for Hailu and demonstrates her growing stature on the global stage.
