Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali of Ethiopia has held important discussions with representatives from the South West, Central Ethiopia, South and Sidama regions on Monday.
The engagement reinforced the Prime Minister’s continued efforts to listen to the diverse challenges and needs facing communities across the country.
In a social media post following the meetings, PM Abiy underscored that efforts to understand and address the concerns of all of Ethiopia’s communities remains a foremost priority for his administration.
Few official details were provided about the specific issues raised during the regional consultations. However, the talks are likely to have covered a range of matters including economic development, public service delivery, security concerns and political representation.
Ethiopia’s regional states have experienced varying levels of tensions, grievances and demands for greater autonomy, which the Prime Minister has sought to resolve through dialogue and reform since assuming office in 2018.
The discussions with regional leaders form part of the premier’s approach of directly engaging with communities, political actors and stakeholders as he works towards fortifying national unity, promoting equitable development and devolution of power.
Fostering inclusion, resolving long-standing ethnic conflicts, and devolving political and economic resources equitably across Ethiopia’s regional states are critical challenges PM Abiy has prioritised.
His pan-Ethiopian agenda has already seen the unbanning of opposition groups, release of political prisoners and opening of media spaces. However, the path to enacting transformative democratic reforms has been extremely complex.
